If you want to update a room in a snap, swap out the light fixtures.
For the past year, I've been replacing the ugly builder-grade fixtures in my early 2000s home. I'm talking boob lights everywhere, florescent monstrosities in the kitchen and laundry room and dated globe lights in all the bathrooms. I love the light fixture transformation - it's nearly instantaneous, easy ('cause my husband does it) and can be really affordable.
I like to change the fixture then walk in and out of the room repeatedly, ooh-ing and ah-ing. Sometimes I invite my husband and children to join me - they always decline. This step is not necessary, but truly fulfilling.
